Painting 1/35 head with acrylic

scale: 1/35

painted by: Vince Wai

This is an photo essay of how I painted the head of one of my recent sculpted 1/35 British soldier. The media used is acrylic paint. For the tools and more information about the paint that I use, please refer to the 1/35 SS article.

The paint I used for painting the face is Polly Scale and Vallejo mixed with Holbein Artist Acrylic paint. The basic fresh is Yellow Orche( Holbein ) + White ( Polly S ) + Burnt Sienna ( Holbein ) + a little bit of light yellow ( Holbein ) + a little bit of orange. The mixed colour is stored in small plastic container. For thinning, I use water added with a few drops of dish detergent. The reason is that the soap solution helps to break up the surface tension and get the paint to hold to the plastic surface of the resin model.

1) This is the resin head and you can see I didn't use any primer. I seldom use primer for figures painted solely with acrylic.  2)The painting begins with several coat of the basic flesh colour. 3)Usually, I start with the eyes and first I added in the white colour.
4)Next, I added the blue black dots 5)Thin lines of blackish brown is added to represent the eyelashes. At this point, you need not worry whether the lines are consistent with the thickness. You can always correct it later on when we start working with the shading of the flesh colour. 6)Here I start to add in thin coat of flesh mixed with reddish brown for the shadow area. The coat should be very transparent and subtle. Don't add in solid colour in one step but give it several coats to build up the colour gradually.
7) 8)More brownish colour is being add. For the darkest area, I add a little bit of black to the paint. 9)Now I move on to paint the highlight. Since I had darken the face quite a bit, my first coat for the highlight area is just the basic flesh colour. Then a little of white is add to the paint for the following coats.
10) More lighter flesh colour added 11) Next is the whiskers area of the lower jaw. I gave the area a wash of dark brown plus blue. 12)
13) 14)Then I add in more washes of light flesh to lighten the cheek and the whisker area. 15)Lips is painted with red mixed with flesh colour.
16)a little bit of white is added to the lip colour for the highlight. 17)Red brown is added to the moustache. I had also started to paint cap comforter with a few coat of brown colour. 18)Hightlight is added to the moustache with yellow orche mixed with brown colour. The cap is painted with lines of black and brown mix.
19)More highlight is added to the moustache, this time with thinner lines of light yellow, white and light brown. For the cap, lines of white mixed with brown is add to show the texture.
